CD58 Activators

CD58 activators are a unique class of chemical compounds that interact with the cell surface protein CD58, also known as lymphocyte function-associated antigen 3 (LFA-3). This protein plays a crucial role in the immune response, enabling communication between cells in the immune system. CD58 primarily interacts with the CD2 protein on T cells, fostering cell-cell adhesion, an essential step in immune response activation. CD58 activators work by either directly or indirectly promoting the activation of CD58, leading to increased interaction with CD2.

The precise mechanisms by which CD58 activators function can vary widely, depending on the specific compound. Some CD58 activators work indirectly by modulating intracellular signaling pathways that control CD58 activation. On the other hand, some compounds like jasplakinolide, which promote actin polymerization, may indirectly propel changes in CD58's role by influencing the formation of the immunological synapse, a crucial structure in T cell activation. It's important to note that not all interactions with CD58 necessarily enhance the immune response. Some compounds might suppress immune activity by modulating CD58's interactions. For instance, cyclosporine A and rapamycin, both of which are immunosuppressants, can indirectly initiate changes in CD58-CD2 interaction by reducing T cell activation.
