TAF II p170 Activators

TAF II p170, also known as TAF1, is a protein that plays a critical role in the initiation of transcription, the process by which DNA is transcribed into RNA. TAF1 is encoded by the TAF1 gene in humans. The protein is a component of the transcription factor II D (TFIID) complex, which is involved in the recognition and binding of the TATA box, a DNA sequence found in the promoter region of many genes. The TFIID complex is fundamental to the assembly of the transcription preinitiation complex, which is necessary for RNA polymerase II to begin transcription.

TAF II p170 itself has been shown to possess multiple enzymatic activities. It has kinase activity, capable of phosphorylating other proteins, and histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity, which allows it to add acetyl groups to histones. These modifications can alter the structure of chromatin (the material comprising DNA and proteins in the nucleus) and influence gene expression. The importance of TAF II p170 extends to its involvement in various cellular processes, such as cell cycle progression, DNA repair, and apoptosis. Its role in transcription also implicates it in a number of diseases, including cancer, where dysregulated gene expression is a common feature. In summary, TAF II p170 is a multifunctional protein involved in the initiation of transcription. Its role in this fundamental cellular process, along with its other functions, makes it a crucial player in cell biology and a potential target for intervention in diseases associated with transcriptional dysregulation.
