PADI1 Inhibitors

PADI1 inhibitors are a class of chemical compounds designed to specifically inhibit the activity of the enzyme Peptidylarginine Deiminase 1 (PADI1). PADI1 is one of the isoforms of the peptidylarginine deiminase family of enzymes, which are responsible for converting arginine residues in proteins into citrulline through a process known as citrullination or deimination. This post-translational modification can significantly alter the structure and function of proteins, affecting various cellular processes such as gene expression, protein interactions, and cellular signaling.

Inhibitors of PADI1 are typically small molecules that interact with the enzyme's active site, preventing it from binding to its substrate and carrying out the citrullination reaction. By blocking this enzymatic activity, PADI1 inhibitors can disrupt the normal physiological processes mediated by PADI1. Research into PADI1 inhibitors focuses on understanding the specific roles of PADI1 in various cellular contexts and how its inhibition affects the overall cellular landscape. These inhibitors serve as valuable tools for elucidating the function of citrullination in biological systems and investigating the broader implications of modulating PADI1 activity.
