Mycophenolic Acid is a small molecule that can be found in fermentation products from several Penicillium species. Mycophenolic Acid functions as a potent reversible inhibitor of IMPDH (inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase), leading to a depletion of GMP in the cell and interruption of the de novo synthesis of purines necessary for lymphocyte proliferation. Its role as a selective inhibitor makes it useful in agricultural research, particularly in studying plant-pathogen interactions and developing strategies for crop protection.
