MFSD3, or Major Facilitator Superfamily Domain Containing 3, is a human protein encoded by the MFSD3 gene. It is a member of the Major Facilitator Superfamily (MFS), which is one of the largest groups of secondary active transporters. Proteins in the MFS typically facilitate the transport of a wide array of substrates across cellular membranes, including sugars, amino acids, nucleosides, ions, and various small molecules, often using the electrochemical gradient of ions like protons (H+) or sodium (Na+) ions as the driving force.
The MFSD3 protein, like other MFS transporters, is predicted to have multiple transmembrane domains, which allow it to embed within the cellular membrane and form a channel or carrier-like structure to mediate the movement of substances from one side of the membrane to the other. Transport by MFSD3 is thought to be critical for maintaining cellular homeostasis and for the proper functioning of metabolic pathways.Despite being part of a well-characterized superfamily, the specific substrates and physiological roles of MFSD3 remain largely unknown. However, it's hypothesized that MFSD3 may be involved in transporting small organic molecules or ions, which is consistent with the functions of other characterized members of the MFS. As secondary transporters, MFSD3 could potentially operate via a symport or antiport mechanism, coupling the transport of its substrate to that of an ion moving down its concentration gradient.
