Kallikrein-related peptidase 15 (KLK15) is a member of the kallikrein subfamily of serine proteases, a group of proteins known for their diverse physiological functions. KLK15 is also known as KLK-L2, and is encoded by the KLK15 gene in humans.KLK15, like other kallikreins, is involved in the proteolytic cascade, a sequence of reactions where one enzyme activates the next, leading to the amplification of a biological signal. KLK15 is secreted as an inactive proenzyme (pro-KLK15) and is activated through proteolytic cleavage.Although studies on KLK15 are relatively limited compared to other kallikreins, there is evidence suggesting its involvement in various biological processes. This includes skin desquamation, tooth enamel formation, and more notably, cancer progression.
Particularly in cancer research, KLK15 has gained attention as it has been found to be aberrantly expressed in several types of cancers, including prostate, ovarian, and breast cancers. Overexpression of KLK15 has been associated with increased cancer invasiveness and poor prognosis in some studies. Moreover, KLK15 and other kallikreins are being explored as potential targets for intervention. Inhibitors of kallikreins could potentially hinder cancer progression and improve outcomes. In summary, KLK15 is a serine protease with potential roles in various biological processes and diseases, most notably cancer. Continued research into this protein will help elucidate its precise functions and relevance.
