MCIDAS, a vital component of the geminin protein family, plays a crucial role in the generation of multiciliated cells within the respiratory epithelium. This nuclear protein is essential for the development of respiratory epithelial cells that bear multiple motile cilia, contributing significantly to mucociliary clearance. Mutations in the MCIDAS gene are associated with a rare mucociliary clearance disorder known as Reduced Generation of Multiple Motile Cilia (RGMC), characterized by recurrent respiratory infections in affected individuals.
