DNA pol μ Activators

DNA Polymerase Mu (Pol μ) is an enzyme encoded by the POLM gene in humans. It's part of the X family of DNA polymerases, which are primarily involved in DNA repair processes.Pol μ plays a crucial role in the non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) pathway, a major mechanism for repairing double-strand breaks in DNA. These breaks, if left unrepaired, can lead to genome instability and cell death. Unlike most DNA polymerases, Pol μ has the unique ability to add nucleotides to the broken DNA ends even when they are not perfectly complementary, thereby facilitating the repair process.

Pol μ can also perform translesion synthesis, a process that allows the DNA replication machinery to bypass lesions or damages in the DNA that would otherwise stall replication.Due to its pivotal role in DNA repair, Pol μ is implicated in maintaining genome integrity. However, its error-prone nature can also lead to mutations. This duality makes Pol μ a protein of interest in the context of human diseases. For instance, it is thought to play a role in the development and progression of cancer, where DNA repair and mutagenesis are key factors.
