S-100A5 Activators

S-100A5, also known as S100 Calcium Binding Protein A5, is a protein that is encoded by the S100A5 gene in humans. It's a member of the S100 family of proteins, which are known for their capacity to bind calcium ions and participate in the regulation of a variety of cellular processes.The S100 family includes over 20 members, characterized by an EF-hand motif, a helix-loop-helix structure that binds calcium ions. S-100A5, like other S100 proteins, exists primarily as a dimer, and can form homodimers (two identical S-100A5 proteins) or heterodimers with other S100 proteins.

S-100A5 is expressed in a variety of tissues, but is particularly abundant in the olfactory bulb and salivary gland, suggesting specific roles in these tissues. In the olfactory bulb, it is thought to be involved in the process of smell perception, while in the salivary gland, it may play a role in saliva secretion.In addition to these physiological roles, S-100A5 has been implicated in several diseases. Overexpression of S-100A5 has been observed in various types of cancers, including breast, lung, and ovarian cancer. It also appears to promote cancer cell invasion and metastasis, suggesting a role in cancer progression.
