RCC1 and BTB domain-containing protein 1 (RBT1) is a protein that, based on its domain architecture, is presumed to have a role in cellular processes such as chromatin remodeling and protein degradation. The protein is named for its domains: the Regulator of Chromosome Condensation 1 (RCC1) domain and the Broad-Complex, Tramtrack, and Bric à brac (BTB) domain.
The RCC1-like domain suggests that RBT1 may function as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF), specifically for the small GTPase Ran, which plays a critical role in nucleocytoplasmic transport, mitotic spindle assembly, and nuclear envelope formation. Through its RCC1 domain, RBT1 would bind to Ran and catalyze the exchange of GDP for GTP, thus activating Ran and enabling it to interact with various downstream effectors involved in these essential processes.Additionally, the BTB domain indicates potential involvement in protein-protein interactions, such as the formation of cullin-RING E3 ubiquitin ligase complexes, which are pivotal in targeting specific substrates for proteasomal degradation. The BTB domain of RBT1 could mediate the assembly of such complexes, implicating RBT1 in the regulation of protein turnover and, consequently, various aspects of cellular homeostasis.
