NIF-1, which stands for Nucleolar complex protein 1 homolog, is a protein encoded by the gene NIF1 in humans. It is a multifunctional protein implicated in several cellular processes, particularly in chromatin remodeling and transcriptional regulation. NIF-1 is known to interact with the nucleosome remodeling deacetylase (NuRD) complex, a multiprotein assembly that is critical for altering chromatin structure to regulate gene expression.
NIF-1 has been shown to function as a transcriptional repressor, and its interaction with the NuRD complex suggests a role in histone deacetylation, an important epigenetic modification that typically leads to a more condensed chromatin state and transcriptional repression.
