IL-10 Inhibitors
IL-10 Inhibitors are a chemical class of compounds that selectively target and modulate the activity of Interleukin-10 (IL-10), a cytokine with pivotal roles in regulating immune responses and inflammation. IL-10 is a pleiotropic cytokine produced by various immune cells, including macrophages, T cells, and B cells, in response to infection or inflammation. Structurally, IL-10 is a homodimeric protein consisting of two identical subunits, and it exerts its biological effects by binding to specific cell surface receptors, IL-10R1 and IL-10R2, leading to downstream signaling events.
The functions of IL-10 are multifaceted and context-dependent, making it a central player in the modulation of immune responses. IL-10 is primarily considered an immunosuppressive cytokine because it exerts inhibitory effects on various immune cells. It can suppress the activation and function of macrophages and dendritic cells, leading to reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and antigen presentation. Additionally, IL-10 can dampen the activity of T cells and inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β). These actions collectively contribute to the downregulation of excessive or harmful immune responses, preventing immune-mediated tissue damage and maintaining immune homeostasis.
