Cystatin C Antibody (T12) is a rat monoclonal IgG2b antibody that detects cystatin C in mouse, rat, and human samples through western blotting (WB) and immunoprecipitation (IP) applications. Anti-cystatin C antibody (T12) recognizes a crucial cysteine protease inhibitor that plays a significant role in regulating proteolytic activity in extracellular environments, making cystatin C vital for maintaining cellular homeostasis and preventing unwanted tissue damage. Cystatin C is predominantly secreted and forms a two-fold symmetric dimer, which is essential for modulating cysteine protease activity and influencing the expression of class II major histocompatibility complex molecules. Cystatin C serves as a reliable biomarker for kidney function and glomerular filtration rate, with expression levels providing insights into renal health. Mutations in the cystatin C gene can lead to protein aggregates, which are associated with hereditary cerebral amyloid angiopathy and increased risk of cerebral hemorrhage. While both wild-type and mutant forms of cystatin C can form inactive dimers in a concentration-dependent manner, the mutant variant dimerizes at lower concentrations and shows greater vulnerability to degradation by serine proteases, potentially promoting aggregation. In neuronal cells, oxidative stress enhances cystatin C expression, suggesting a role in apoptosis regulation and highlighting cystatin C′s importance in various physiological and pathological processes.
