Anti-BPI antibody (D-3) plays a crucial role in the immune response, as BPI is an antibacterial and endotoxin-neutralizing molecule predominantly found in the granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, specifically neutrophils. The human BPI gene, which spans 31.5 kb on chromosome 20q11.23-q12, consists of 15 exons and encodes a 456 amino acid protein that is vital for protecting mucosal surfaces against gram-negative bacterial infections.
