YY1 Inhibitors

YY1, also known as Yin Yang 1, is a ubiquitously expressed transcription factor with diverse roles in numerous cellular processes, including embryogenesis, differentiation, replication, and apoptosis. It possesses dual regulatory functions, acting as both an activator and a repressor of gene transcription. Given its multifaceted nature, YY1 can bind to an array of DNA target sequences and interact with a multitude of other proteins, thereby regulating a vast number of genes. The name Yin Yang reflects its dual nature in gene regulation, underscoring its ability to either upregulate or downregulate the expression of target genes. The structure of YY1 comprises four C2H2-type zinc fingers, which facilitate DNA binding, and other domains that allow protein-protein interactions.

YY1 inhibitors are chemical entities specifically designed to modulate the activity of the YY1 transcription factor. By targeting YY1, these inhibitors can influence the transcriptional activity of numerous genes that YY1 regulates. The mechanisms of action of these inhibitors can vary: some might interfere with the DNA-binding capability of YY1 by altering its conformation, while others might prevent its interaction with co-regulatory proteins, thus affecting its transcriptional activity.
