QUICK LINKS

Suramin sodium is a symmetrical hexasulfonated naphthylurea that has been utilized as a research tool in various biochemical applications. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of several enzymes, including those involved in purine metabolism, and as such, it has been employed to study the regulation and inhibition of these enzymes in metabolic pathways. Additionally, Suramin sodium is used in the investigation of cellular signaling pathways, as it can non-selectively interfere with the binding of growth factors to their receptors, thereby modulating cell growth and differentiation processes. In studies of protein-protein interactions, Suramin sodium provides insights into the structural requirements for binding specificity and the effects of such interactions on cellular functions. Moreover, due to its polyanionic nature, this compound is used in the exploration of heparin-binding protein domains and the influence of glycosaminoglycans on protein function. Its high negative charge density makes Suramin sodium a useful agent in the study of charge-charge interactions in biological systems.
