The acronym YPEL stands for Yippee-Like, with the name 'Yippee' being found in a similar protein first identified in Drosophila melanogaster. These proteins are characterized by their Yippee domain, a conserved region that suggests a fundamental role in cellular processes.
Although the full extent of their functions is still being unraveled, YPEL proteins are believed to be involved in several crucial cellular activities.
