UIP1 Activators

Ubiquilin-1 (UIP1), also known as UBQLN1, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the UBQLN1 gene. It belongs to the ubiquilin family, which are proteins known to interact with the ubiquitin-proteasome system, a crucial cellular pathway for protein degradation.UIP1 is characterized by several functional domains, including a ubiquitin-like domain at the N-terminus and a ubiquitin-associated domain at the C-terminus. These domains allow UIP1 to bind to both ubiquitinated proteins and components of the proteasome, facilitating the delivery of ubiquitinated proteins to the proteasome for degradation.

UIP1 is also known to interact with presenilin, a protein involved in the production of beta-amyloid, a key player in Alzheimer's disease pathology. This suggests a role for UIP1 in neurodegenerative diseases, although the specifics of this role are still being investigated.Some studies have linked mutations in the UBQLN1 gene to increased risk of Alzheimer's disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), highlighting the potential importance of UIP1 in neurodegenerative disorders.Moreover, UIP1 may play a role in cancer. It has been suggested that UIP1 can influence the degradation of growth-promoting proteins, thereby potentially affecting cancer progression.
