Torsin4A is a protein that is part of the Torsin family, which are ATPase enzymes that reside within the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the contiguous nuclear envelope. These proteins are implicated in a variety of cellular processes, including protein processing and the maintenance of the nuclear envelope's structure and dynamics. Torsins are known to be involved in the response to ER stress and in the management of misfolded proteins, a critical function for cellular health and proper protein trafficking.
Torsin4A may play a role in the complex choreography of protein folding and processing within the ER. It could be involved in the quality control systems that ensure only properly folded proteins proceed to their destinations, blocking the accumulation of toxic misfolded protein aggregates. The expression of Torsin4A, like other ER-resident proteins, may be regulated by the unfolded protein response (UPR), a cellular stress response related to the ER's function. The UPR is activated in response to the accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins in the ER, leading to an increase in the production of molecular chaperones and other proteins that aid in protein folding, including Torsin4A.
