Succinate-CoA ligase GDP/ADP-forming subunit beta (SUCLG2) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SUCLG2 gene. This protein is a component of the succinate-CoA ligase enzyme, also known as succinyl-CoA synthetase, which plays a crucial role in the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle or TCA cycle), a central pathway in cellular metabolism.
The succinate-CoA ligase enzyme is composed of two subunits, an alpha subunit and a beta subunit. SUCLG2 is one of the two possible beta subunits and is specific for the formation of GDP from GTP.In the citric acid cycle, succinate-CoA ligase catalyzes the conversion of succinyl-CoA to succinate, while simultaneously forming either ATP from ADP or GDP from GTP, depending on the specific beta subunit present. This step is unique in that it represents a substrate-level phosphorylation, directly generating a molecule of ATP or GTP.
