Bongkrekic acid is a mitochondrial permeability transition pore blocker that acts as an inhibitory ligand of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocator. This compound may act to inhibit apoptosis by preventing PARP cleavage and DEVDase activity. Bongkrekic acid exhibits the ability to hinder mitochondrial depolarization, swelling, rupture of the mitochondrial outer membrane, and the release of apoptogenic proteins like cytochrome c. This effect has been observed in Jurkat cells undergoing staurosporine-induced apoptosis, as well as in HepG2 cells undergoing apoptosis triggered by TNF-α and ethanol.
