Reg Iβ, also known as Regenerating Family Member 1 Beta (REG1B), is a protein that is encoded by the REG1B gene in humans. Similar to Reg Iα, it's part of the regenerating gene (REG) family, which was initially identified during studies on pancreatic islet regeneration.Reg Iβ is primarily expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, with the highest levels seen in the stomach and the small intestine. It plays a role in the maintenance and repair of the gastrointestinal tract by promoting cellular proliferation and differentiation and has anti-apoptotic effects that help protect cells from programmed cell death.
Studies have also shown that Reg Iβ is overexpressed in several types of gastrointestinal cancers, including gastric and colorectal cancers, suggesting it might play a role in tumor growth and progression. This overexpression has been associated with cancer aggressiveness and poor prognosis, which indicates that Reg Iβ might serve as a biomarker for these cancers. In addition to its role in cancer, Reg Iβ has been associated with inflammation and immune responses.
