LSm5 Activators

LSM5 Homolog, U6 small nuclear RNA and mRNA Degradation Associated (LSM5) is a protein encoded by the LSM5 gene in humans. It belongs to the LSM family of proteins, which are part of the Sm-like (LSm) protein family. These proteins are universally distributed among eukaryotes and are involved in RNA processing and degradation.LSM5, like other LSM proteins, is primarily found in the cytoplasm and the nucleus of cells. It forms part of two distinct complexes in these cellular compartments: the cytoplasmic LSM1-7 complex and the nuclear LSM2-8 complex. Each of these complexes has specific roles in different aspects of RNA metabolism.

The cytoplasmic LSM1-7 complex, which includes LSM5, is involved in mRNA degradation, a crucial process for regulating gene expression. Specifically, this complex promotes the decapping of mRNA molecules, which leads to their degradation and thus, controls the levels of different proteins in the cell. The nuclear LSM2-8 complex, on the other hand, is involved in the processing of U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA), an essential component of the spliceosome, the molecular machine that splices introns out of pre-mRNA molecules in eukaryotes. In summary, LSM5 is an essential protein involved in the regulation of gene expression through its roles in mRNA degradation and snRNA processing.
