LRRC17 Activators

Leucine-rich repeat-containing 17 (LRRC17) is a protein encoded by the LRRC17 gene in humans. Characterized by its leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domain, LRRC17 is part of a larger family of proteins known for their involvement in protein-protein interactions and their contribution to a variety of cellular functions, including signal transduction and cell adhesion.

LRRC17 has been most notably studied in the context of bone biology. It is recognized as a regulator of osteoclastogenesis, the process by which osteoclasts, the bone-resorbing cells, differentiate and become active. LRRC17 acts as a negative regulator, meaning it inhibits the formation of osteoclasts, thereby playing a protective role in maintaining bone density and blocking excessive bone loss.The expression of LRRC17 is thought to be influenced by various signaling pathways that are critical to bone metabolism, including those activated by mechanical stress, hormonal changes, and inflammatory cytokines. Its role in bone homeostasis suggests that alterations in LRRC17 expression or function could be implicated in bone-related disorders, such as osteoporosis, where the balance between bone formation and resorption is disrupted.
