ESPNL Activators

ESPNL or Espin-like protein, is a protein encoded by the ESPNL gene in humans. This protein is a member of the espin family, which includes actin-binding proteins predominantly found in the stereocilia of hair cells in the inner ear and in the microvilli of the intestinal epithelium. They play essential roles in the development and maintenance of these cellular structures. The ESPNL protein, like other members of the espin family, possesses an actin-bundling activity. Actin is a major component of the cytoskeleton, a framework that provides structure and shape to cells. By bundling actin filaments, ESPNL contributes to the formation and maintenance of cell protrusions like stereocilia and microvilli, which are critical for sensory reception and nutrient absorption, respectively.

Specifically, ESPNL is believed to be involved in the elongation of stereocilia, the hair-like projections on the surface of hair cells in the inner ear. These structures are critical for the transduction of sound and balance signals into electrical signals that the brain can interpret.Mutations in other espin family genes, like ESPN, have been linked to deafness, suggesting that dysregulation or mutation of ESPNL could potentially have similar effects. In summary, ESPNL is an actin-bundling protein that plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of cell protrusions such as stereocilia and microvilli.
