The ability of α-S1-casein to form these micelles not only aids in nutrient absorption but also plays a significant role in the overall nutritional quality of milk. α-S1-casein exists in multiple alternatively spliced isoforms and is encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 4, a region that also encodes other casein family members. This chromosome houses nearly 6% of the human genome and contains some of the largest gene deserts, which are areas devoid of protein-coding genes. Mutations in certain genes on chromosome 4 have been linked to various genetic disorders, including Huntington′s disease and polycystic kidney disease, highlighting the significance of this genomic region in human health.
