ZBTB8OS, or Zinc Finger and BTB Domain Containing 8 Opposite Strand, also known as ZBTB8A-AS1, is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene. Despite the name suggesting it encodes a protein, ZBTB8OS actually refers to a non-coding RNA which does not get translated into a protein but instead has roles in the regulation of gene expression.LncRNAs like ZBTB8OS are increasingly recognized as important regulators in various biological processes, including chromatin modification, transcriptional control, and post-transcriptional processing. They can affect gene expression by acting as scaffolds, decoys, guides, or enhancers, influencing the function of proteins, RNA molecules, or even altering the structure of chromatin.
While ZBTB8OS does not encode a protein, it is located antisense to the ZBTB8A gene, which implies that it might be involved in regulating the expression of the ZBTB8A gene or its protein product. ZBTB8A encodes a protein that is a member of the zinc finger protein family and has roles in transcriptional regulation. The precise functions of ZBTB8OS are still being studied, but lncRNAs, in general, are implicated in a wide range of cellular processes, including cell cycle regulation, cell differentiation, and development. Dysregulation of lncRNAs has been associated with various human diseases, such as cancer, neurological disorders, and developmental abnormalities.
