SEZ6L, or Seizure Related 6 Homolog Like, is a protein encoded by the SEZ6L gene. This protein is a member of the SEZ6 family, which also includes SEZ6 and SEZ6L2. SEZ6L is predominantly expressed in the brain and is thought to play a role in neurodevelopment and synaptic function. The structure of SEZ6L includes multiple domains: a CUB domain, which is implicated in developmentally regulated protein-protein interactions; a sushi domain, also known as a complement control protein (CCP) module, which is involved in immune response regulation and cell adhesion; and several C-terminal transmembrane regions, indicating that SEZ6L is a membrane protein.
SEZ6L has been of particular interest in neuroscience due to its potential involvement in the pathophysiology of neurological disorders. Genetic studies have identified SEZ6L as a potential risk factor for conditions such as schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder, suggesting that it may influence neural circuitry and cognitive functions. Moreover, SEZ6L has been linked to the regulation of synaptic plasticity, a fundamental process underlying learning and memory. The exact mechanisms by which SEZ6L contributes to neural development and synaptic function are not fully understood. However, its domain structure and expression pattern point to a role in mediating cell-cell interactions in the nervous system, possibly through synaptic signaling pathways or by influencing the organization of the postsynaptic density
