Nup37, also known as Nucleoporin 37, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NUP37 gene. It's a part of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), a massive assembly of proteins that spans the nuclear envelope and acts as a gateway for molecular traffic between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The NPC is composed of around 30 different proteins, known as nucleoporins, and Nup37 is one of them. Nup37 is a component of the Nup107-160 subcomplex, which is a critical component of the NPC. This subcomplex plays key roles in NPC assembly, function, and positioning in the nuclear envelope.
By being a part of the NPC, Nup37 is involved in the regulation of the transport of molecules across the nuclear envelope. This includes the transport of RNA and proteins in and out of the nucleus, a critical process for cellular function.Nup37, as a part of the Nup107-160 subcomplex, is also implicated in mitotic spindle assembly and function, which are crucial for cell division. Thus, Nup37 might play a role in cell proliferation.Alterations in the NUP37 gene or the Nup37 protein could potentially disrupt the function of the NPC and thereby affect nuclear-cytoplasmic transport and cell division.
