Meteorin Activators are chemical compounds that specifically enhance the functional activity of Meteorin, a protein involved in the cAMP-PKA pathway. These activators mainly act by increasing the levels of cAMP, which is a crucial second messenger involved in multiple biological processes. For example, Epinephrine, Isoproterenol, PGE2, PACAP, GLP-1, VIP, Dopamine, Histamine, and Serotonin are all able to increase cAMP levels by activating specific receptors that are involved in the cAMP-PKA pathway that Meteorin is a part of. The increased cAMP levels can enhance the activity of PKA, leading to an increase in the functional activity of Meteorin.
In addition, some Meteorin Activators function by inhibiting the breakdown of cAMP, leading to increased levels of this second messenger in the cell. For instance, Rolipram and IBMX inhibit phosphodiesterase, an enzyme that degrades cAMP, leading to increased intracellular cAMP levels. Forskolin, on the other hand, directly stimulates adenylate cyclase, the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of cAMP from ATP. As the level of cAMP rises, the activation of PKA is enhanced and, consequently, the functional activity of Meteorin is increased.
