LTV1, also known as Late assembly factor of the 40S ribosomal subunit, is a protein encoded by the LTV1 gene in humans. This protein is a critical component of the small (40S) ribosomal subunit and plays a crucial role in the process of ribosome biogenesis, particularly in the late stages of the assembly of the 40S ribosomal subunit.Ribosomes, composed of RNA and proteins, are the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis. Since protein synthesis is a fundamental process for all living cells, factors like LTV1 that contribute to the formation of ribosomes are vital for cell survival and growth.
In the context of ribosome biogenesis, LTV1 is localized in the nucleolus and the cytoplasm. In the nucleolus, a subnuclear compartment where ribosome assembly begins, LTV1 participates in the early steps of 40S subunit formation. In the cytoplasm, LTV1 is involved in the late stages of 40S subunit assembly before it is incorporated into a functional ribosome. Mutations in the LTV1 gene or dysregulation of its expression affect ribosome biogenesis and, consequently, protein synthesis. This could lead to a variety of cellular abnormalities and contribute to diseases, such as cancer, where protein synthesis is often upregulated.
