HACL1 Activators

2-Hydroxyacyl-CoA Lyase 1 (HACL1) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HACL1 gene. This protein is primarily located in the peroxisomes, small organelles within the cell that are involved in the breakdown and synthesis of various biological molecules.HACL1 is the only known enzyme capable of breaking down 2-hydroxy straight-chain fatty acids through a process known as alpha-oxidation. This role is particularly important in the metabolism of dietary phytanic acid, a type of branched-chain fatty acid. If phytanic acid cannot be properly metabolized, it can accumulate and lead to a condition known as Refsum disease.

Besides its role in fatty acid metabolism, HACL1 also plays a part in the breakdown of certain amino acids, specifically the branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine. This process is crucial for energy production, especially in muscle tissue. The HACL1 gene is widely expressed in human tissues, which underscores its fundamental role in cellular metabolism. In summary, HACL1 is an important metabolic enzyme involved in the breakdown of certain fatty acids and amino acids. Its role in metabolism underscores its importance in maintaining healthy cellular function.
