G2 and S phase-expressed-1 (GTSE1) is a protein in humans that is encoded by the GTSE1 gene. As the name suggests, GTSE1 is expressed during the G2 and S phases of the cell cycle, and it plays significant roles in cell cycle regulation, particularly in relation to the G2/M transition.GTSE1 interacts with several other proteins, most notably p53, a key tumor suppressor protein. Under normal conditions, GTSE1 binds to p53 and facilitates its nuclear export, thereby inhibiting p53's ability to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. However, upon DNA damage, GTSE1 is phosphorylated and its interaction with p53 is disrupted, allowing p53 to exert its tumor suppressor functions.
In addition to its interaction with p53, GTSE1 also binds to microtubules and is involved in regulating their stability. This is important for proper chromosome segregation during cell division, and aberrant regulation can lead to aneuploidy, a condition associated with cancer. From a perspective, GTSE1 has been implicated in several types of cancer. High levels of GTSE1 expression have been associated with poor prognosis in cancers such as breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and gastric cancer. Its role in promoting cell proliferation and inhibiting p53 suggests that it may contribute to tumor growth and resistance to therapy.
