Estriol Inhibitors

Estriol inhibitors, in a broader context, refer to compounds and chemicals that can effectively block or reduce the action and synthesis of estriol, a form of estrogen. The primary mechanism of action for many of these chemicals involves antagonizing estrogen receptors, thereby reducing the cellular effects of estriol and other estrogens. Chemicals like Tamoxifen, Raloxifene, and Toremifene are termed selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). They exhibit tissue-specific effects, acting as antagonists in some tissues and agonists in others. Their capacity to compete with estrogens, like estriol, for binding sites on the estrogen receptor makes them key players in this category.

In contrast, chemicals such as Letrozole, Anastrozole, and Exemestane are aromatase inhibitors. Aromatase is the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of estrogens. By inhibiting this enzyme, these chemicals effectively reduce the synthesis and thus levels of estriol. Fulvestrant stands out as it promotes the degradation of the estrogen receptor itself, adding a unique mechanism to this group.
