Osteoclast stimulatory transmembrane protein (OC-STAMP) is a protein implicated in the differentiation and function of osteoclasts, which are specialized cells responsible for bone resorption. The exact mechanism by which OC-STAMP facilitates the fusion of osteoclast precursors is not fully understood. However, it is believed that the protein influences the expression of fusion-related genes or may actively participate in the membrane fusion process itself. The importance of OC-STAMP is underscored by studies showing that its absence or dysfunction can lead to defects in osteoclast fusion, resulting in osteopetrosis, a condition characterized by increased bone density and skeletal abnormalities due to impaired bone resorption.
