β-defensin 15 Activators

Defensin beta 115, commonly abbreviated as DEFB115, is a specific member of the beta-defensin protein family. Beta-defensins are small cationic peptides that play a crucial role in the innate immune response of mammals, including humans. They are characterized by their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses. Beta-defensins are also involved in modulating the adaptive immune response by functioning as chemotactic agents for immune cells.DEFB115 is encoded by the DEFB115 gene. Like other beta-defensins, DEFB115 is expressed in various epithelial tissues, which are interfaces between the internal and external environment of the body. These tissues include the skin, respiratory tract, and urogenital tract, where they serve as the first line of defense against invading pathogens.

The structure of beta-defensins, including DEFB115, is defined by a conserved beta-sheet domain stabilized by disulfide bonds formed from six conserved cysteine residues. This structure is essential for their ability to integrate into microbial membranes, leading to membrane permeabilization and subsequent microbial cell death. In addition to their direct antimicrobial functions, beta-defensins such as DEFB115 can bind to specific receptors on host cells, such as the toll-like receptors, to trigger immune responses that help control infection. They can induce the production of cytokines, enhance the expression of cell-adhesion molecules, and promote the maturation of dendritic cells, thus bridging innate and adaptive immunity.
