Transferrin Antibody (E-8) is a mouse monoclonal IgG1 antibody that detects transferrin in human samples through various applications including western blotting (WB), immunoprecipitation (IP), immunofluorescence (IF), immunohistochemistry with paraffin-embedded sections (IHCP), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Transferrin plays a crucial role in iron metabolism, serving as the primary iron transport protein in vertebrate serum, which is essential for maintaining iron homeostasis in the body. Transferrin consists of two homologous domains, each containing an iron-binding site, allowing effective binding and transport of iron to cells that require it, such as erythroblasts and reticulocytes. This transport mechanism is vital because iron is a key component of hemoglobin and is necessary for oxygen transport in the blood. Additionally, transferrin is synthesized predominantly in the liver, with lower levels produced in the testis and brain, highlighting its importance in various physiological processes. Upon binding to transferrin receptor (TfR or CD71), transferrin releases iron precisely where needed, and any defects in the transferrin gene can lead to serious conditions such as atransferrinemia, characterized by microcytic anemia and iron overload. Anti-transferrin antibody (E-8) is therefore an invaluable tool for researchers studying iron metabolism and related disorders.
