SEE ALSO...

SC Antibody (C-2) is a mouse monoclonal IgG1 kappa light chain antibody that detects SC protein of mouse, rat, and human origin by western blotting (WB), immunoprecipitation (IP), immunofluorescence (IF), immunohistochemistry with paraffin-embedded sections (IHCP), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). SC (C-2) antibody is available in both non-conjugated and various conjugated forms, including agarose, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), phycoerythrin (PE), fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), and multiple Alexa Fluor® conjugates. SC protein plays a vital role in mucosal immunity, acting as a molecular chaperone for polymeric immunoglobulins, specifically dimeric IgA and pentameric IgM, which are produced and secreted by B cells in the lamina propria beneath the mucosal lining of polarized epithelial cells. SC protein′s function is crucial as SC protein facilitates the transcellular transport of these immunoglobulin polymers across epithelial barriers, ensuring they remain intact and resistant to enzymatic degradation during the transcytosis process. Secretory component (SC) is generated when polymeric immunoglobulin receptors (pIgRs) on the basolateral surface of glandular epithelia associate with these immunoglobulins and undergo proteolytic cleavage. Human SC gene is located on chromosome 1q31-q41 and encodes a 764 amino acid protein that features five units homologous to the variable regions of immunoglobulins, along with a transmembrane region that shares similarities with certain immunoglobulin variable regions. This structural and functional integrity of SC protein is essential for maintaining effective mucosal immunity, highlighting SC protein′s importance in the immune response.
