Integrin α2 (HAS-4) is a mouse monoclonal IgG2a antibody. Integrins are heterodimers composed of noncovalently associated transmembrane α and β subunits. The sixteen α and eight β subunits combine to produce more than 20 different receptors. Most integrin receptors bind to extracellular matrix components, including Fibronectin, collagen, and Vitronectin. Some integrin receptors also bind to soluble ligands like fibrinogen or counter-receptors on nearby cells, such as intracellular adhesion molecules (ICAMs), leading to cell aggregation. Ligands cross-link or cluster integrins by binding to adjacent integrin receptors, with both receptor clustering and ligand binding necessary for activating integrin-mediated responses. Beyond mediating cell adhesion and cytoskeletal organization, integrin receptors act as signal transducers. Integrin-mediated signals influence cell growth, differentiation, migration, and apoptosis. Integrin α2 enables platelets and other cells to adhere to collagens, while also regulating collagen and collagenase gene expression, force generation, and organization of newly formed extracellular matrix.
