IgD chain C is an allelic product of the human IGHD gene, with two known alleles, IGHD 01 and IGHD 02, which produce isoforms that serve distinct functions; isoform 1 is a secreted protein, while isoform 2 is a single-pass type I membrane protein. IgD chain C plays a crucial role in the adaptive immune system, as IgD antibodies are monomers expressed by activated B cells, contributing to the immune response. IgD chain C structure is characterized by three immunoglobulin-like domains, and is located on chromosome 14 within the human heavy chain locus, specifically on the 3′ side of the IgM chain C region.
