FKBP10, also known as peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase, plays a crucial role in protein folding and trafficking within the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), which is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis and proper protein function. This 582 amino acid immunophilin is localized to the ER lumen and is found in various tissues, including the heart, spleen, brain, testis, and lung. The structure of FKBP10 includes two EF-hand calcium-binding domains and four FKBP-type domains, indicating enzymatic function in catalyzing the cis-trans isomerization of proline imidic peptide bonds in oligopeptides, a process vital for correct protein folding.
