ABAT Antibody (B-12) is a mouse monoclonal IgG2a kappa light chain antibody that detects ABAT protein of mouse, rat, and human origin by western blotting (WB), immunoprecipitation (IP), immunofluorescence (IF), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Anti-ABAT antibody (B-12) is available in both non-conjugated and various conjugated forms, including agarose, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), phycoerythrin (PE), fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), and multiple Alexa Fluor® conjugates. ABAT, also known as 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase, plays a crucial role in the catabolism of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. By converting GABA into succinic semialdehyde, ABAT helps regulate GABA levels, which is vital for maintaining neuronal excitability and preventing excessive neuronal firing. This regulation is particularly important in preventing neurological disorders associated with GABA dysregulation, such as epilepsy and anxiety disorders. ABAT is a 500 amino acid protein located in the mitochondrial matrix and exists as a homodimer, binding pyridoxal phosphate as a cofactor. ABAT is expressed in various tissues, including the liver, brain, pancreas, kidney, placenta, and heart. The gene encoding ABAT is located on human chromosome 16p13.2, and mutations in this gene can lead to GABA-AT deficiency, a condition characterized by hypotonia, hyperreflexia, psychomotor retardation, lethargy, EEG abnormalities, and refractory seizures.
