It belongs to the leiomodin family, which also includes LMOD1 and LMOD2, characterized by their actin filament nucleation activity, meaning they can initiate the formation of new actin filaments. LMOD3 is structurally similar to tropomodulins, proteins that cap the pointed ends of actin filaments, but unlike tropomodulins, LMOD3 also possesses an actin-nucleating function crucial for muscle contraction.
In muscle cells, LMOD3 plays a vital role in sarcomere organization. Sarcomeres are the fundamental contractile units of muscle fibers, and the proper assembly of these units is essential for muscle function.
