The BamHI Z fragment, often referred to as BZLF1, Zta, or simply Z, is a protein encoded by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), a herpesvirus known to cause infectious mononucleosis and associated with several types of cancer.The BZLF1 protein plays a critical role in the EBV's life cycle, particularly in the switch from the latent (dormant) phase to the lytic (active) phase. This switch allows the virus to replicate and spread.
