Chitinase-like protein Ym1 (Ym1), also known as Chil3 (Chitinase-like 3), is a protein found in mice. It is secreted predominantly by macrophages and other immune cells, particularly during the immune response to parasitic infections and in certain inflammatory conditions.Despite its name, Ym1 does not exhibit chitinase activity. Chitinases are enzymes that degrade chitin, a component of the cell walls of fungi and the exoskeletons of insects and crustaceans. However, Ym1, while structurally similar to chitinases, lacks the necessary enzymatic activity.Ym1 is a marker of alternatively activated macrophages (AAMs), also known as M2 macrophages. These macrophages play a crucial role in tissue repair, wound healing, and immune regulation. They are notably involved in the response to parasitic infections and in the modulation of allergic inflammation.
Ym1 is thought to contribute to the immune response and inflammation through several mechanisms. It can act as a chemotactic factor, attracting immune cells to the site of infection or inflammation. Moreover, Ym1 can bind to heparin and heparan sulfate, which are involved in various biological processes including inflammation and coagulation. In summary, Ym1 is a chitinase-like protein produced by macrophages in response to certain stimuli. It is a marker of M2 macrophage activation and is involved in immune response and inflammation, despite not having chitinase activity.
