WFDC11, also known as WAP four-disulfide core domain 11, is a protein that, like other members of the WFDC domain protein family, is characterized by the presence of the WAP-type four-disulfide core motif. This motif consists of a stable core with eight cysteine residues forming four disulfide bridges, conferring protease resistance and structural stability to the protein. WFDC11 is encoded by the WFDC11 gene. The biological functions of WFDC11, as with many WFDC proteins, are not fully elucidated. However, the family is generally associated with roles in innate immunity and the regulation of protease activity. WFDC11 is thus postulated to contribute to host defense mechanisms, potentially by exerting antimicrobial properties, modulating protease activity, or playing a role in the regulation of inflammation.
Expression of WFDC11 may be found in various tissues, particularly those exposed to external environments such as mucosal surfaces. Its expression could be part of a broader response to maintain tissue integrity and to protect against microbial invasion or overactive proteolysis, which could otherwise lead to tissue damage.Research into WFDC11 may uncover specific pathways and interactions that the protein participates in, shedding light on its contribution to cellular and systemic processes.
