Serine (or cysteine) peptidase inhibitor, clade A, member 1A," generally referred to as SERPINA1A, is a variant of the serpin family of proteins. Serpins are a group of proteins with similar structures that function primarily as inhibitors of serine proteases, enzymes that cleave peptide bonds in proteins. SERPINA1A specifically is an inhibitor of serine proteases, notably neutrophil elastase, an enzyme that can degrade elastin and other extracellular matrix proteins during inflammation when not regulated.SERPINA1A is most closely related to alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT), which is encoded by the SERPINA1 gene. Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a condition caused by mutations in the SERPINA1 gene, can lead to lung diseases such as emphysema and can also affect the liver, where the protein is primarily synthesized. The deficiency of AAT results in an imbalance between proteases and antiproteases, leading to tissue damage from uncontrolled protease activity.
