SerRS, also known as Seryl-tRNA Synthetase, is a protein encoded by the SARS gene in humans. It is an enzyme that plays a vital role in protein synthesis, one of the most fundamental processes in biology.SerRS belongs to the class of enzymes known as aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs). These enzymes are responsible for attaching specific amino acids to their corresponding tRNA molecules, a crucial step in protein synthesis. In the case of SerRS, it links the amino acid serine to its tRNA.
The process, known as tRNA aminoacylation or charging, ensures that the correct amino acid is added during the translation of the genetic code into a protein. Each aaRS enzyme corresponds to one of the 20 standard amino acids, and SerRS specifically recognizes and binds to serine. In addition to its canonical role in protein synthesis, studies have suggested that SerRS has other functions, including roles in the regulation of angiogenesis and inflammation. Mutations in the SARS gene have been associated with disorders such as hyperuricemia, a condition characterized by high levels of uric acid in the blood.
