Salmonella typhimurium is a rod-shaped, flagellated, gram-negative bacterium belonging to the genus Salmonella. It is a facultative anaerobe, capable of living with or without oxygen. This bacterium is one of the many serotypes of Salmonella enterica and is a leading cause of foodborne gastroenteritis in humans. Infection with S. typhimurium, commonly referred to as salmonellosis, is typically associated with indicators like diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, and vomiting.S. typhimurium is known for its ability to infect a wide range of hosts, including humans and other mammals, birds, and reptiles. Infection usually occurs through the ingestion of contaminated food or water, especially undercooked eggs, poultry, and meat, or through contact with infected animals. The bacterium is adept at surviving harsh conditions, including acidic environments like the stomach, which contributes to its effectiveness as a pathogen.
Once ingested, S. typhimurium can invade the intestinal epithelium. It employs a range of virulence factors, including its flagella for motility and a specialized protein secretion system (Type III secretion system) to inject effector proteins into host cells. These effectors facilitate invasion, promote bacterial survival, and can trigger inflammatory responses in the host. Most cases of S. typhimurium infection are self-limiting. However, in immunocompromised individuals, young children, or the elderly, the infection can become severe, sometimes leading to more serious complications or systemic infections.
