RRBP1, or Ribosome Binding Protein 1, is a protein that is encoded by the RRBP1 gene in humans. This protein is an integral membrane glycoprotein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and is involved in the translocation of proteins across the ER membrane. RRBP1 is characterized by a domain structure that includes coiled-coil regions, which likely contribute to its role in protein translocation and potentially in the formation of protein complexes.RRBP1 has a notable function in the synthesis of secretory proteins. It is postulated to be involved in the recognition of the signal sequence of nascent polypeptide chains and in their subsequent translocation into or across the ER membrane. This process is essential for proteins that are destined to be secreted or localized to the ER, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, or the plasma membrane.
The presence of RRBP1 in the ER membrane places it as a key component in the early secretory pathway, implicating it in various cellular processes that depend on the proper folding and trafficking of secretory and membrane-bound proteins. It is also thought to have a role in the quality control system of the ER, known as the ER-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway, which targets misfolded or improperly assembled proteins for degradation. In addition to its fundamental roles in protein processing and quality control, RRBP1 may be involved in the pathophysiology of certain diseases. For example, dysregulation of ER functions, including those mediated by RRBP1, can lead to ER stress and the unfolded protein response, which have been implicated in diseases such as diabetes, neurodegeneration, and cancer.
